Make a Real Difference to Children’s Lives

The Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant Association (FHLTA) is looking for a passionate and enthusiastic Volunteer Trustee & Children’s Representative to support children who have received, or are awaiting, a heart and/or lung transplant at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, and their families.

Brief information about FHLTA

FHLTA is a patient and family led charity dedicated to supporting heart and lung transplant patients of the Freeman Hospital and their families. We also work closely with medical teams to support research, training and initiatives that improve the patient experience.

The Role

As a Children’s Representative Trustee, you will help create safe, inclusive and enjoyable opportunities for children to connect, build confidence and feel supported. You’ll ensure children’s voices are heard and represented throughout FHLTA’s work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Champion children’s best interests at all times, putting their wellbeing first
  • Creating a friendly and inclusive environment
  • Being a voice and advocate for children and families
  • Organise and oversee children’s activities and events
  • Lead, coordinate, support, build the children’s sports team and attend the British Transplant Games
  • Liaise with children, families, professionals and partner charities
  • Offering guidance, signposting and reassurance
  • Ensure safety, safeguarding and accessibility across all activities
  • Attend FHLTA trustee meetings via TEAMS/in person as required and contribute to charity initiatives

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone with compassion and a personal connection to heart or lung transplantation, who is passionate about children’s wellbeing, inclusion and the gift of life. You should be organised, approachable and confident communicating with a wide range of people in a number of ways.

You will need:

  • An Enhanced DBS check – a transferrable one can be used (or can be arranged by FHLTA)
  • Safeguarding training (arranged by FHLTA)
  • A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle (essential)
